Course Description: The Diode laser is the most commonly used laser to support Periodontal Therapy. More often than not the results do not meet up to expectations. By understanding the basic science behind diode laser use, the spatial parameters of the soft tissue that you are treating and the photothermal temperature dynamics your success rate will significantly improve.This course will review some basic microbiology and the Periodontal Pathogens that we encounter. We will provide you with basic application protocols using a Periodontal Treatment Model. A variety of surgical cases will also be provided in the course.

Course Breakdown and Instructions:

Module Goals:

Module 1 – Introduction to Laser Science

Provide fundamentals for understanding of:
  • Basic  Microbiology  of  Periodontal  Apparatus
  • Periodontal  Disease
    • Laser history
    • Definitions-Laser light specifics
    • Units and measurement used with lasers
    • Basic laser physics → Laser tissue interaction
    • Assembly of laser
    • Differences between lasers
  • Gas , Solid State, or Semi-Conductor  Phases
  • Photothermal Effects on Soft Tissue
  • Laser Safety

Module 2 – Diode Hygiene Applications

Provide fundamentals for understanding of:
  • Soft Tissue Spatial Dynamics
  • Coagulation Principles
  • Temperature Dynamics
  • Application Technique
  • Soft Tissue Surgery with Case Presentations

To successfully complete this course, you will need to study the material presented in the course presentation. This is a self-paced course that can be paused and returned to at a later time. Once you have reviewed the course presentation in its entirety, you will need to complete the final assessment below. Lastly, please make sure to submit the required course evaluation.

Assessment:
